FACTS ABOUT RESIDENTIAL SECURITY
- All a burglar often needs is five minutes to break in, enter, and leave with your property.
- Nearly half of all burglaries happen while residents are away - at school, work, out of town, or even just down the street.
- 1 out of every 3 burglary victims are residential homeowners.
- 1 out of every 3 homes will experience a break-in, fire, or carbon monoxide poisoning within the next six years.
- 20 people die by fire in their homes every 24 hours.
HOW TO DETERMINE RISK FACTORS
- Do you have easy-access entry points such as out of the way windows or back doors without dead bolts?
- Do you leave your home empty for periods of time daily?
- Do you or your kids forget to lock all doors before leaving?
- Do you have keys "hidden" beneath doormats, planters, or in other places in the front of your house?
- Do you have high "privacy" fences that would inhibit your neighbors from viewing any unusual activity?
- Do you test your security panels, fire alarms, and locks regularly to make sure they all work properly?
HOW TO PREVENT BREAK-IN AND THEFT
- Using dead bolts and window-blocking devices such as bars or dowls can prevent breaches.
- Using double-plated glass windows is safer than single-plated.
- Use secure locks on all screen doors as well as main doors.
- Lock all windows and install anti-lift devices.
- Get to know the people on your street and establish trust with your neighbors.
- Communicate with your neighborhood watch group often.
